Rural Clinical Social Work Training Program:

The Clinical Social Work training program offers social work trainee's an 8-month block practica and general practica in affiliation with the University of Missouri Kansas city School of Social Work masters program, and we accept certain doctoral social work students from nationally known training programs (e.g. Smith).  Applicants from other accredited social work programs are welcomed. 

The clinical social work program includes extensive supervision in psychotherapy, case management, addictions treatment, treatment of children and adolescents, geriatric social work, and multidisciplinary team treatment and collaborative care.  Our program offers training in both clinical and administrative aspects of social work practice.

The program is under the direction of Angela Lippa, MSW, LCSW.  Mrs. Lippa is a senior level clinical social worker and the Director of the Department of Social work at CMHC, Inc.  She holds a master’s degree in clinical social work.

Additional social work faculty include:  Angela Lippa, MSW, LCSW, Michelle Loscher, MSW, LCSW, Dr. Roger Wise, LCSW, and Stephen Kelley, MSW, LCSW.

Social Work Training Goals:

1.  Train clinical social workers with the experience and skills to function as psychotherapists and clinical leader members of multidisciplinary treatment teams in health care facilities.

2.  Train clinical social workers with the experience and skills to function as hospital and day treatment primary therapists.

3.  Train clinical social workers with the experience and skills necessary to maintain the high levels of productivity necessary to maintain adequate funding of social work programs and professional income.

4.  To build upon the coursework and educational institution experience with additional didactic training and clinical study.

Evaluation:

Clinical social workers will be evaluated using the following criterion:

1.  Teamwork and professionalism

2.  Ability to contribute to specific program rotation goals and objectives as a clinical staff member.

3.  Productivity and efficiency.

4.  Quality of clinical work.

5.  Ability to assimilate the health care organizations philosophy and model.

6.  Relationship with supervisors and colleagues.

7.  Relationship with patients and their family.

8.  Quality of didactic participation, examination performance, and assignment.

9.  Energy, attitude, and enthusiasm.

10.  Supervisor’s ratings.

Didactic Courses:  CMHC, Inc. uses Blackboard based online training courses which are supplemented by lecture and individual and group supervision.  Social work trainees will participate in the following online courses: a. Treatments That Work-based on Peter Nathan’s book annotating the scientifically validated treatments for major disorders; b. Substance Abuse: An introduction, and Advanced Substance Abuse Treatment-these two courses use the major texts in the substance abuse area; c. Rotations:  Each social work trainee will have rotations in the following areas of clinical experience:  a. case management; b. children and adolescents; c. substance abuse treatment; d. general adult clinical; e. adult serious and persistent mental illness; f. day treatment and partial hospital treatment; g. crisis intervention and emergency services; h. clinical assessment and admissions team.  Several rotations are completed simultaneously.  The rotations occur at our hospital programs, at the day treatment center, and at the general mental health center.

Income:  As per Missouri Law regulating the practice of social work, social work trainees will file for and obtain the license of Provisional Licensed Social Worker (PLSW).  Consistent with our pay format for professionals, socials will be paid a percentage of collected fees for services which they render at the programs.  The average PLSW earns between $36,000 and $42,000 in their first training year.
