CMHC, Inc. Marital & Family Therapy Training Program:

 

Admissions Process:   The MFT training program accepts application year round and admits students on a quarterly basis (January, April, July, October).  The applicant should submit to the Director of the MFT Training Program (Glen Christie, Ed.S., LPC, LMFT, AAMFT, EMT, AAMFT Supervisor-in-Training) official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, reprints or representative samples of professional writing, a resume, current licenses/certifications, and a cover letter indicating the reasons for seeking MFT training and future professional goals.  Completed transcripts will be reviewed by a three practitioner admissions committee made up of MFT training faculty, at least two of which will be AAMFT Approved Supervisors.

 

Minimum Qualifications:  Qualified applicants will have a masters or doctorate degree in MFT, psychology, social work, psychiatric nursing, medicine, osteopathy, professional counseling with at least one year of supervised experience as a psychotherapist.  For graduates of MFT graduate programs, students with at least 3 courses in MFT or MF theories can apply to waive the year of supervised psychotherapy experience.

 

Training Faculty: 

 

Glen Christie, Ed.S., LMFT, LPC, EMT, RASACII, AAMFT Supervisor-in-Training is a clinical member of AAMFT, a senior AAMFT Supervisor in training with only his personal theory publication remaining, a certified teacher and educational specialist, a professional counselor with community mental health center and psychiatric hospital experience, a Registered Associate Substance Abuse Counselor II, and the director of the CMHC, Inc. MFT Training Program.

 

Dr. Jerry Morris is a licensed clinical psychologist, a licensed professional counselor, an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, a board certified school psychologist, a board certified counselor, a board certified case manager, holds a Missouri Life-time teaching certificate in school psychology, a member of the National Academy of Neuropsychology, a member of the National Academy of Practice in Psychology, holds certification in The Treatment of Alcohol and Other Psychoactive Substance Use Disorders with the APA National College of Psychology,  an author of books and scientific articles and an active member of MAFT and AAMFT, and APA Division of Family Psychology.

 

Dr. Roger Wise is a licensed clinical psychologist, a licensed clinical social worker, an ordained minister of the Christian Church Deciples of Christ, an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, an author of scientific and professional articles, and an active member of AAMFT and MAFT.  

 

Dr. Ward Lawson is a licensed counseling psychologist in Kansas and Missouri, an AAMFT Supervisor-in-Training, a member of the National Academy of Psychology, a member of the APA Division of Family Psychology, an active member of MAFT & AAMFT, and an author of scientific and professional articles.

 

Dr. Share Bane is a licensed professional counselor, an assistant professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, a consultant to the Department of Mental Health and the Division of Aging on geropsychology, a past President of MAFT, an AAMFT Supervisor-in-Training, and an active member of MAFT and AAMFT.

 

Training Program: 

 

1.      Required patient rotations: a) couples, b) adolescent identified patient families, c) substance abusing families, d) families with an aging identified patient, e) families with an inpatient or day treatment identified patient, f) violent and abusive families, g) families with an identified patient who is seriously and persistently mentally ill.

2.      The program requires that the student complete a minimum of 25 written family diagnostic assessments using systems interview and history taking skills, structured assessment surveys and instruments, geneograms and family projective techniques.

3.      Participation in multidisciplinary treatment planning meetings and case conferences for two hours each week.

4.      Participation in a minimum of four family therapy and related 8 hour didactic training seminars per year.

5.      Participation in two hours per week of individual supervision of family therapy using audio and video taped family sessions, a two way mirror supervision of families, verbatim analysis of family therapy sessions, and one-on-one dialogues with the supervisor.

6.      Presentation of an assigned topical presentation to the professional staff (4 hours) complete with a written set of educational objectives, bibliography, and post seminar examination.

7.      Completion of a personal theory of family therapy.

8.      The student must pass three written area examinations covering: a) family systems assessment, b) family systems theory, c) family systems interventions.

9.      Completion of two years full-time or 4,000 hours of supervised family therapy clinical practice and training.

 

Stipend and Pay: 

 

MFT students will receive a unit rate of $10 per unit for family therapy provided during their training program.  MFTs who are licensed mental health or health professionals in another dicipline and are respecializing will receive their collection percentage rate which is commensurate with the CMHC, Inc. established rate of reimbursement for that dicipline and credential.  Part-time trainees only qualify for the $10 per unit rate of reimbursement. 

 

Supervision Training:

 

CMHC, Inc. will admit up to 4 full-time faculty members each year who may participate in our supervision training residency.  This residency is designed to train AAMFT Approved Supervisors.  Individuals interested in admission to this program should contact Dr. Jerry Morris at morris49@aol.com .
