Residency Requirements

Admission:  Only individuals with a masters degree or doctorate degree in counseling or related degree as specified by Missouri statute regulating the licensure of counselors may be admitted to our program.  Students seeking admission must supply a graduate degree and official transcript, three letters of reference (one of which should be from a faculty member at their training program), a resume, a letter indicating their training goals and career interests to Dr. John Hagy, chair of the professional.

Supervision: Trainees will have two hours of individual supervision and two hours of group supervision per week.  The trainee will have access to a number of faculty supervisors (some who are licensed professional counselors, some psychiatrists, some licensed social workers, and some psychologists.

Didactics:  The trainees will be required to attend certain Saturday didactics which are appropriate for counselors during each year (approximately 6 per year).  Assigned professional readings modules with examination are a required component of the training program.  Didactics and training modules are focused in the areas of family therapy, addictions therapy, ethics, and professional issues.

Rotations:  The training program requires that rotation be completed in the following areas:  family therapy, addictions, child and adolescent counseling, group counseling, group psychoeducational counseling, and crisis counseling.  A rotations run coterminously during the training program.   Many or our residents simultaneously finish their counseling residency while getting to required supervision and specialty training to become a certified or licensed Marital and Family Therapist and/or certified Substance Abuse Counselor.

National Examination:  Each trainee is required to take and pass the NBCC examination prior to graduation from the program.
